Six hurt as police cane irate mob

Six people were injured on Monday when the police caned an irate mob at Jalsur, about eight km from Sullya in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

The mob was setting fire to tyres, when the police intervened. Two policemen were injured as the crowd resorted to stone-throwing.

Meanwhile, tension gripped Puttur town in the district after a group stoned a place of worship on Monday.

According to the police, the trouble began with a verbal duel between two youths, following which stones were thrown on the place of worship and nearby shops.

A Karnataka state reserve police constable was also injured in the incident, the reports said.

Business establishments downed their shutters.

The town had witnessed violence on July 9 over the murder of a college girl.

In another development, the All College Students Union of Mangalore University has given a strike call on Wednesday in protest against the girl's murder.

Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M C Nanaiah told the state legislative council that Small Industry Minister B A Mohideen and Fisheries Minister Jayaprakash had rushed to the troubled Puttur town to restore peace. He said the prime accused in the murder had been arrested.
