Match-fixing won't affect political career: Azhar

Former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin said he was confident that the match-fixing controversy surrounding his name would not have any impact on his political innings.

Azharuddin, who last month joined the Congress, said here no criminal case had been filed against him in relation to the match-fixing scandal.

"But I had registered a case against the BCCI in this regard," he told a meet the press programme.

Asked if the scandal, which cut short his brilliant cricket career in 2000, would impact his candidature in the Lok Sabha elections, the former stylish batsman said, "I do not think this will cause any difficulty in the elections."

Asked to name the constituency from which he would contest the elections, the former skipper, like a seasoned politician, said he will contest from wherever his party ordered him to do so. Azharuddin, who runs an event management company in Hyderabad, joined the Congress on February 19.
