Ansari, who was brought to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh for his role in the attacks, has confessed to conducting a survey of likely targets in the city and providing information to the Lashkar terrorists in Pakistan.
An investigating officer told rediff.com that Ansari used e-mail to communicate with his Lashkar minders. While checking his e-mail account, the police discovered an e-mail with details of the Mumbai attacks.
Ansari did not get a chance to read the e-mail as he was already in police custody for his involvement in the attack on the Central Police Reserve Police camp in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh.
Sources reveal that the e-mail arrived in Ansari's inbox on December 3, 2008; apart from details of the attacks, it also provided information on the Pakistan government's reaction to 26/11.
Ansari also received e-mails on November 29 relating to the transfer of funds and other banking details.
There were several e-mails informing him about the ongoing Israel-Hamas face-off, an investigating officer said.
In the Lashkar e-mail Ansari was given a minute to minute account of the Mumbai attacks; the operations at the Taj Mahal hotel were meticulously explained.
The Mumbai police is trying to identify the sender, who goes under the name 'Sonia'.
They are sure though that this e-mail was sent out by the Lashkar.
Ansari also confessed to the Mumbai police that he used a Pakistani passport. He has confirmed Sabahuddin's statement that the Rampur attack was a dry run for the Mumbai attacks.
