Pakistan's Islamist party leader Maulana Fazal-ur-Rahman has been chosen to head a top parliamentary panel to lobby Islamabad's case on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

National Assembly member Maulana Fazal, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, was elected chairman of the special committee on Kashmir on Monday, officials said.

Rana Ishaq, a member of National Assembly from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, expressed reservations over Fazal's election. Ishaq wondered how the Maulana would be able
to project the 'Kashmir issue' at the international level with Britain reportedly having banned the Jamiat leaders entry into the country.

The members of the Parliamentary committee demanded that suitable material on Kashmir issue should be prepared by the secretariat for distribution among people inside as well as outside the country, the statement said. It was also urged to hold briefings on important aspects of the issue, including construction of dams by India.

The special parliamentary committee on Kashmir, which was constituted recently by Pakistan's lower House, comprises 31 members. As one of the important parliamentary panel, the slot of its chairman goes to a seasoned and respected politician, a National Assembly secretariat statement said.
