Six persons were arrested in connection with the clashes between two groups of Congress workers during the rally of United Progressive Alliance chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in suburban Goregaon, Mumbai, on Thursday evening.
A group of Congress workers started shouting slogans against Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and demanded installation of Revenue Minister Narayan Rane as the CM after the arrival of Gandhi at the venue NESCO while the initial speeches were on.
The arrested have been identified as Afzal Chandale (33), Siddhant Bhosale (22), Chetan Mahobiya (24), Prashant Sudhala (21), Vinod Jadhav (32) and Babloo Dubey (30), police said.
However, it was not immediately clear as to whom the Congress workers were allied with. "That is a part of our investigations," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XII) A V Patil told PTI in Mumbai.
After the initial slogan shouting by a group of around 60-70 workers, others intervened in the matter leading to a scuffle between the two groups.
Policemen in plainclothes posted at the spot tried to pacify the crowd, but ultimately uniformed policemen had to intervene to bring the situation under control, Patil said.
