A jawan of the Border Security Force was killed and a farmer injured on Wednesday when Bangladesh Rifles troopers opened fire on them at Mirsultanpur village on the border in West Bengal's Malda district.

BSF sources said a hail of bullets hit the 40-year-old border guard, Sudarshan K G, as the BDR resorted to unprovoked fire at 5.20 am, when he went to the border to relieve himself.

The jawan of the 123 battalion died of his wounds on the way to Malda Sadar Hospital.

District Magistrate of Malda, C R Das, said there was an exchange of fire between the border guards after the incident but the situation was under control and senior officers of the police and the BSF have rushed to the spot.

The farmer, who suffered a bullet injury in the knee while he was watering his land, has been admitted in the same hospital.

Two Bangladesh Rifles personnel were killed on the Indo-Bangla border at Murshidabad district last week.
