A Lok Sabha session will be summoned on July 21, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said on Friday night.

It said that subject to exigencies of government business, the session may conclude on July 22.

Earlier in the evening, the Union Cabinet had recommended to President Pratibha Patil to convene a special session of the Lok Sabha on July 21-22 to enable the government to seek a vote of confidence.

The Union Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, endorsed the decision of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs to hold a special short session of the Lok Sabha on July 21-22.

The special session had to be called as the Left parties, which have 59 members in the Lok Sabha, withdrew support to the UPA government after the two sides failed to reconcile their differences on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

The Samajwadi Party, with whom the Congress has had a tempestuous relationship, decided to support the ruling alliance after the Left parties pulled the rug from under the government on Tuesday.
