34 acquitted in '92 Mumbai riots case

The special riots court on Friday acquitted 34 persons accused of rioting, stone pelting and assault during the 1992-93 communal clashes in Mumbai.
       
Magistrate S S Sharma acquitted 34 persons on Friday, after the prosecution failed to prove its case against the accused and none of the police witnesses identified the them.
       
According to the prosecution, in December 1992 a mob of around 100 persons had gone on a violent rampage at Dindoshi, a suburb in northwest Mumbai.
       
The crowd was allegedly chanting anti-Muslim slogans and pelted stones at the police patrol van. According to the prosecution's case, the crowd had also assaulted several inncoent bystanders.
       
The Dindoshi police had registered a case agianst 60 persons, however only 34 of the accused had attended the court proceedings since its commencement. The remaining accused have been shown as absconding.
