Orissa's suspended IPS officer B B Mohanti was on Friday granted bail by a district court in Jaipur, a day after being sent to judicial custody for allegedly helping his son and rape convict Bitti to jump parole.
Additional district court judge C P Sharma, in his order, asked Mohanti to submit a surety and bail bond of Rs one lakh, circle officer of Lalkothi police station K N Ratnu told PTI.
The court order is yet to reach the Central Jail, where Mohanti was lodged, Ratnu said. Mohanti was sent to judicial custody for two weeks on Thursday by additional chief judical magistrate Rajendra Kumar Bansal, who had rejected his bail plea.
The officer's son Bitti was lodged in the same jail before he jumped parole and has been missing since December 2006.
Mohanti has been evading police teams from Orissa and Rajasthan since August 24, 2007. A Jaipur court had declared the officer an absconder on the charge that he had helped his son jump parole and go into hiding.
Bitti was given parole from November 20 to December 4, 2006, following an application pleading that his mother was ill. Bitti was found guilty of raping a German research scholar by a court, a month after he committed the offence in Alwar on March 20, 2006.
