Violence returned to the volatile region of Nandigram as a woman was killed and two persons suffered injuries in a clash between two armed groups near Tekhali on Sunday.
Both groups were armed with country-made guns and other weapons, the police said in Kolkata on Sunday.
State Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said that the groups had been exchanging fire since Sunday morning, though the reason behind the clash was not yet known.
Police reinforcements have been sent to the area and the situation was now under control, Kanojia said.
Nandigram has been in the news since January because of intermittent clashes between supporters of the Communist Part of India Marxist and the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee members over the government's plan to acquire land for setting up a chemical hub.
Clashes between the police and local villagers had led to the death of 14 persons on March 14 this year. Several areas in Nandigram are still inaccessible with BUPC members keeping a check on all entry and exit points to the area.
Although the government has announced that it will not acquire land in Nandigram or set up the chemical hub there, tension in the area is yet to subside.
