The Supreme Court will, on Thursday, pronounce its verdict on the Centre's demand for referring to a larger bench, the controversy relating to 27 percent quota for OBCs in elite Central educational institutions.
A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat had, on May 9, asked the parties to the dispute to formulate their questions
that can be considered by a larger bench, which the Centre has demanded.
The bench had made it clear that it was not averse to referring the matter to a Constitution bench. However, it wondered whether the matter required reference to a Constitution Bench as many acts are routinely assailed before
the courts.
In other words, the courts pointed out that many statutory laws were challenged for their Constitutional validity but were not necessarily referred to the Constitution Bench.
But as the Centre persisted with the demand, the bench agreed to examine the plea.
