While 28 residents of the Laxmi Chhaya building in suburban Borivali, Mumbai, died after it collapsed on Wednesday evening, two persons visiting the ill-fated building at the time when tragedy struck were saved.
Sagar Shedge (23), a car insurance agent, was visiting his employer Jatin Mehta to deliver insurance papers of his customers.
Soon the building collapsed and a pillar came crashing down to wipe out the entire Mehta family.
However, Shedge survived with multiple fractures in his right foot and a head injury. He is currently recuperating at the Trauma Care Unit of Shri Hiralal Bhagwati General Hospital in suburban Borivali, where most of the victims were brought for treatment.
"Sagar's employer and his entire family died in front of him. With grace of God, he survived. But he is in a state of shock and has not spoken anything," Sagar's elder brother Tushar told PTI.
Sagar's 60-year-old mother sitting beside her injured son kept mum, but looked skywards with teary eyes as if to thank the Almighty.
Sarika Kapadia (27), who was found alive under the debris after 12 hours, had gone to the building to teach students at the time of the incident.
Though buried under the debris with her two girl students, she fanned them hard with playing cards lying around to prevent suffocation.
While one of her students Aastha Mehta managed to survive the ordeal, Vinita Jain was not fortunate.
Kapadia who is recuperating at Karuna Hospital in Borivali, is not yet aware of Jain's death.
