An Indian Institute of Technology student allegedly committed suicide on Saturday by hanging himself in his hostel room, police said.

Balkrishna Gupta, who hailed from Kanpur, was found hanging inside room number 129 of hostel number 12 in IIT's sprawling campus located in North West Mumbai's Powai, they said.

Gupta, who was pursuing his Phd at the prestigious institute, left a note saying he was taking the extreme step due to some personal reasons and added that no one else was responsible for it, they added.

His exact age, however, was not immediately known.

This is the second case of an IIT student committing suicide inside the campus in the last one year.
