All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator from the Park Town constituency in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Srinivasan, has came out with a novel plan to help the people in his constituency.

Srinivasan will provide those below the poverty line with insurance cover.

According to Srinivasan, he was very much concerned with the increasing number of deaths due to accidents in his constituency.

He said under the new scheme, to begin with, 100 people who are below the poverty line would be insured for an amount of Rs 1 lakh in case of accidental deaths.

''Park Town is one of the most congested areas in the city, and a lot of accidents occur here. In many cases, the family members of the victims find it difficult even to meet the funeral expenses. Though the government helps the victims by providing a solatium in many cases, the family members find it difficult to avail the amount."

Initially, Srinivasan plans to cover 1,000 members, including disabled people, auto drivers, rickshaw pullers and labourers.

"This insurance scheme is a joint venture programme assisted by the Indian Bank and the United India Insurance Company,'' he said.

He said he would create awareness among the people about the need of taking an insurance.
