The son of Prof H S Sabharwal, who died in Ujjain last week after being allegedly attacked by students, has petitioned the National Human Rights Commission seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the circumstances leading to his father's death.
"We want the state government to hand over the case to the CBI for a fair probe as we have no faith in the local administration," Himanshu Sabharwal told reporters here after filing the petition with the commission on Monday.
He claimed that his request to transfer the case to the central investigating agency had been rejected by the state government.
"We have also asked NHRC to issue notices to Madhya Pradesh chief minister, sub-divisional magistrate and police officials present at the time of the incident for encouraging violence and tampering with evidence," Himanshu said.
The media should also be made respondent in the case for being witness to the incident, he added.
He has also written to President A P J Abdul Kalam, seeking his intervention in the matter.
Himanshu also said he was yet to get documents such as post-mortem report and medico-legal certificate, effectively making it impossible for him to approach the Supreme Court.
Himanshu is also planning to meet Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar to ask him to ensure a fair investigation.
