The Bombay high court on Friday granted bail to Aliston Pareira, who is accused of killing seven persons when he ran over pavement dwellers in suburban Bandra on November 12.

The court, which granted bail for a surety of Rs 25,000 to the 21-year-old Pareira, directed him to pay a compensation of Rs 35,000 each to the heirs of the dead within a week.

Seven people, including two children, died and 14 were injured in the mishap on Carter Road.

The six occupants of the car, including Pareira, were returning from a party and were allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

The occupants, all aged between 18 and 21, were arrested soon after the accident. Pareira was charged under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), while the other five were booked under the Bombay Prohibition Act and released on a bail of Rs 5,000 each.
