A senior police official attached to the Anti-Terrorism Squad died near Matunga railway station after being run over by a suburban train late Monday night, police said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Vinod Bhatt was found dead in between Matunga and Dadar railway stations and senior police officials said there was no immediate evidence to suggest that he may have committed suicide.

Fifty-four-year old Bhatt, who was posted in the Anti-Corruption Bureau, was temporarily shifted to the ATS after the July 11 blast. He was responsible for the office paper work, which that included compilation of statements, evidences and preparation of charges, sources said.

ATS officials said there appeared to be no probability of Bhatt committing suicide by flinging himself before a train.

However, some of his friends told PTI that Bhatt, for unusual reasons, had returned his official vehicle at Dadar railway station and had told his staff that he was returning to his Chembur residence by train.

Senior Mumbai police officials said it was matter of investigation to find out if Bhatt suffered from any personal or professional problems.

His body has been sent to Sion hospital mortuary.
