The Indian Medical Association on Wednesday sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to save the career of 69 nonresident Indian medical students, whose admission has been cancelled by a Supreme Court order.
In a memorandum to Singh, IMA's National President Sudipto Roy alleged that the West Bengal government had done nothing to help the students, studying in two West Bengal government medical colleges, get out of the crisis.
"They (the students) are continuing a peaceful agitation and relay hunger strike and some of them have fallen ill as a consequence," Roy said in the memorandum.
These medical students have been thrown out of a course at a time when they have nowhere to go in the middle of the session, he said.
The students were admitted under a special quota. While the West Bengal government had fixed 100 seats under the quota, the SC had ordered that it be reduced to 30.
