Pakistan's hard-line cleric and leader of the opposition Maulana Fazlur Rehman has termed the use of condoms in the name of safe sex and population control 'un-Islamic'.

The use of condoms has encouraged unmarried young people to have sex, he was quoted as saying in Lahore.

Rehman, who is also the leader of the Islamist alliance Muttahida Majlis-e Amal, made the comments during a meeting with Commonwealth Medical Trust Director Marianne Haslegrave on Tuesday.

He welcomed the measures taken by the CMT to promote a reproductive health system in Pakistan. He, however, expressed reservations about its policies, which, he said, were 'not in line with the Islamic religion and culture'.
