The Supreme Court Friday directed maintaining a status quo till January 4 for the candidates who availed benefit of 5%reservation for Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh.
The order refers to those candidates who secured jobs and seats in educational institutions through the reservation provided in the ordinance before it was quashed on November 7 by the Andhra Pradesh high court.
A Bench comprising Justice Ruma Pal and Justice A R Lakshmanan said the interim order of the high court to maintain status quo on candidates who availed the benefit of ordinace will continue till January 4.
The high court in an iterim order had provided status quo till December 27.
The order to this effect was passed when Andhra Pradesh government mentioned its petition challenging the high court verdict quashing an ordinance providing 5% reservation for Muslims in government jobs and educational institutions.
The state has sought stay on the high court verdict quashing the ordinance for providing reservations under Article 15 (4) and Article 16 (4) of the Constitution.
