An assistant sub-inspector of police was injured in a scuffle between Vicky Malhotra of Chhota Rajan's gang and Ejaz Pathan affiliated to Dawood Ibrahim's gang, inside the Central Prison in Mumbai, police said on Friday.

Assistant Sub Inspector Shahbuddin Mulani suffered injuries when Pathan and his associates pelted stones and bricks at Malhotra -- known to be a close associate of Chhota Rajan -- in the jail at Arthur Road in central Mumbai Thursday evening.

The ASI has been admitted to the jail hospital and a case of rioting has been registered against those involved at N M Joshi Marg police station, the police said. Both Malhotra and Pathan were lodged in Central Jail as they are facing trials in different cases.

Malhotra was arrested recently while Pathan was deported from Dubai in 2004. The scuffle between the two broke out when ASI Mulani was escorting Malhotra to another cell.

Pathan, Iqbal Kaskar -- brother of Dawood Ibrahim, and others went into a fit of rage on seeing Malhotra and started a heated argument with him. However, police whisked away Pathan and others into their barracks. Inside the barracks, bricks and other construction materials were stored as construction work for toilets was on.

Pathan and his associates threw stones at Malhotra, who dodged them injuring Mulani in the process. Both Chhota Rajan and Dawood Ibrahim gangs are rivals and often engage in fights for supremacy in the underworld, the police said.
