The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday claimed it had recovered Rs 2.7 crore, belonging to Central Excise Commissioner P K Ajwani during searches at a residence in Nana Chowk in central Mumbai.
The residence, from where the cash was recovered, belonged to one Kumar Gandhi, the sources added. Senior officials, including Joint Commissioner G P Srivastava, are investigating, CBI sources told PTI.
On Tuesday September 21, the CBI had searched his residence and office premises in connection with an alleged corruption case and claimed to have recovered Rs 12,00,000 in cash besides documents pertaining to investments in two flats in Andheri, a property in Delhi and one in Kota, Rajasthan.
The same day, Ajwani complained of chest pain and was admitted to Jaslok Hospital.
The CBI had registered a case following a complaint by Ramesh Agarwal of Thane-based Karnataka Dyeing and Printing Mills.
According to sources, Ajwani allegedly demanded Rs 1.5 crore from Agarwal to settle a probe into certain alleged irregularities. The latter had already paid Rs 60,00,000 to Ajwani but refused to make any further payment.
