Maharashtra govt will compensate mishap victims

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 to the kin of the those killed in the derailment of the Matsyagandha Express at Karanjad in neighbouring Raigad district, official sources said.

The announcement regarding the compensation was made by Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who was scheduled to visit the accident site accompanied by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

Sources said the state government would also provide an assistance of Rs 10,000 each to the seriously injured passengers and Rs 5,000 each to those with minor injuries.

At least twenty people were killed and 100 injured when the Mumbai-bound Matsyagandha Express derailed after hitting two boulders between Vir and Karanjadi stations.
