The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation on Wednesday pledged to support the children orphaned in Sunday's tsunami disaster.

According to the latest estimates, tsunamis that hit the South Asian coast and some parts of Africa left over 60,000 people dead. Over 9,000 died in India.

The foundation will adopt children who lost both their parents to the sea's fury and ensure that they are able to complete their schooling, an RGF release said.

A maintenance allowance will be paid to each child.

RGF chairperson Sonia Gandhi said the move was in keeping with the foundation's tradition of helping children.
