Cauvery panel team visits Karnataka reservoirs

The Cauvery Monitoring Committee team left for Delhi on Thursday after visiting all the four reservoirs storing Cauvery waters in Karnataka, and assessing the water required for the catchment area.

The team led by Union Water Resources Secretary A K Goswami did an aerial survey of Hemavathy reservoir, but visited Harangi.

They also visited fields irrigated by Kabini reservoir on Tuesday. Many farmers told the team that due to accumulation of silt the reservoir capacity had come down by almost 20 per cent. They said that though the reservoir was supposed to store 10 tmc feet of water, only 4 tmc feet was available to them. They claimed that another 4 tmc feet of water in the reservoir could not be used as it was below the crest gates.

Goswami, addressing the media in Bangalore, said, "It appears that Karnataka is under stress, but our duty is to submit the report."

The team is expected to submit its findings on Thursday evening to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Karnataka S M Krishna, state Irrigation Minister H K Patil and other officials were served notices to appear before the Supreme Court on September 30 with regard to the contempt of court petition filed by Tamil Nadu.

Reacting to the serving of the notices, Patil, said, "We still can expect justice from the Cauvery River Authority, which is going to meet on September 30 in New Delhi."
