Tamil farm workers burn effigy of Jaya in Mandya

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Hundreds of Tamil farm workers of Mandya district on Saturday evening burnt an effigy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to express their anger against her decision to demand release of the Cauvery water from Karnataka.

While the Chief Minister of Karnataka S M Krishna was representing the state's case in Delhi, farmers in the Cauvery basin continued their protest against the central government. The protests gained more momentum when the news of prime minister's directive to release water, as agreed in the Cauvery River Authority meeting, spread.

Even distant districts, belonging to the Krishna river basin witnessed protest marches, expressing their support to Cauvery river basin farmers.

Meanwhile, the traffic between Mysore and Bangalore remained disturbed on Saturday also with the protesting farmers continuing their roadblocks.

Schools and colleges have remained closed for the last one week. The authorities are contemplating to continue the holidays for another week.
