Centre must take over dams across Cauvery: Jaya

A day after Karnataka suspended the release of Cauvery waters, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday demanded that the Centre take over the dams across the river.

After an all-party meeting convened in Chennai to evolve the state's stand on the Cauvery issue, she said unless the Centre took over the dams, Tamil Nadu would not get water from Karnataka.

She demanded the dismissal of the Karnataka government for "continuously and blatantly defying" the Supreme Court's verdict and the Cauvery River Authority's orders on the Cauvery issue.

The chief minister said if all the parties agreed, she would lead an all-party delegation to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, an official at the Prime Minister's Office told rediff.com on condition of anonymity that Vajpayee had agreed to meet her at 1730 IST on Saturday.

Jayalalithaa would arrive with an entourage of ninety officials, he said.

Later, she was scheduled to meet her state officials and legal experts.
