JD-U to seek PMK chief's help to free Nagappa

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Karnataka Janata Dal United leaders are planning to approach Dr S Ramadoss, leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Tamil Nadu, to resolve the crisis arising from the abduction of former minister H Nagappa by the bandit Veerappan.

The party members felt that since Veerappan considers Ramadoss his leader and belongs to the same Vanniar community, he [Ramadoss] would have a good chance of negotiating the ex-minister's release.

Ramadoss has always supported Veerappan, and had even pleaded for the release of Kannada film star Rajakumar through a personal letter he had sent through Nedumaran two years ago. The party too had enlisted the brigand's help to lure voters for the assembly election in Tamil Nadu last year.

The JD-U leaders have decided to approach Defence Minister George Fernandes to request Ramadoss to help, as Fernandes is on good terms with the PMK leader. They plan to approach Fernandes in Mysore during his visit to Karnataka on Monday, September 16.

Union Minister V Sreenivasa Prasad, who represents the Chamarajanagar reserved constituency in Parliament, will lead the effort to contact Ramadoss if the defence minister gives his assent. Sreenivasa Prasad belongs to Fernandes's Samata Party.

Meanwhile, the state government is said to have approached Dr Sudarshan, who runs a non-governmental organisation in B R Hills, close to the brigand's area of operation, to help establish contact with Veerappan.
