NSG commandos return to Delhi

The operations to nab Veerappan suffered a major setback with the return of the elite National Security Guards commandos to Delhi, on the grounds that it had 'no task on hand'.

Brigadier Raj Seethapathi, head of the NSG unit, informed the Karnataka government that his commandos had come to take part in 'storming operations' and not 'combing operation', official sources said.

He said waiting for the STF to provide clues on the brigand's hideout would be a futile exercise and the NSG would return only if the STF is able to gather 'credible information' on Veerappan's hideout, the sources added.

The 150-member NSG contingent arrived at the Gundal Special Task Force base last week to help the STF nab Veerappan and rescue his hostage, former Karnataka minister H Nagappa.

The lone operation undertaken by the NSG commandos last week ended in a fiasco as the information about the bandit's whereabouts turned out to be false, sources said.

Twenty commandos, however, have been asked to stay back at the Gundal base camp to launch storming operations in the event of an emergency.

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Thursday said the STF had suspended its operations.

The family members of Nagappa and opposition parties, Janata Dal - Secular and Janata Dal - United, had been pressurising the government to halt combing operations, which they feared would endanger the former minister's life.
