Failed 'Capture Veerappan' operation
has Nagappa's family worried

Sadananda R in Kamagere

The decision of the S M Krishna government to take a tough stand against sandalwood smuggler Veerappan has JD(U) leader H Nagappa's family worried.

The weekend's failed operation is weighing heavily on their minds as the brigand had specifically warned the Karnataka government against launching any operation to capture him or rescue Nagappa.

"There has been no contact with Karnataka DGP V V Bhasker in the last 24 hours. Our attempts to contact or meet him have failed," Nagappa's wife Parimala told rediff.com in Kamagere.

She complained that no one had bothered to tell them as to what is happening and that such operations could put her husband's life in danger. "No one cares for our feelings," she alleged.

Pointing out that Chief Minister Krishna had promised not to use force to secure her husband's release, she said she could not understand why he has now broken his promise.

"We don't think the STF can rescue our father safely. Negotiations would be the best way out. We request the government to stop operations and start negotiations," Nagappa's children appealed.

Meanwhile, agitated supporters of the abducted ex-minister are complaining that the government is not taking the hostage crisis seriously.

They are planning to stage a protest in front of the Vidhan Soudha, the state secretariat.
