'Don't ask army to hunt for Veerappan'

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

State police forces should not expect the army's help to nab common criminals like forest brigand Veerappan, Deputy Chairman of the Services Recruitment Board Lt General J P S Yadav said in Chennai on Saturday.

Talking to newspersons after the passing-out parade at the Officers Training Academy in the city, Yadav said the armed forces of the country were ready to face any challenge to the nation's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, but 'should not be called in to nab the likes of Veerappan'.

"If need be, paramilitary forces could be pressed into service," he said pointing out that Veerappan's illegal activities were essentially a law and order problem.
