The Veerappan saga may just be about to end, as around 4,000 personnel from the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Special Task Force on Friday night surrounded the Dinnahalli forest, where the brigand is suspected to be holed up along with his hostage and Janata Dal leader H Nagappa.
"We are expecting results in another two or three hours," an STF officer told rediff.com on condition of anonymity.
Veerappan is within a radius of one to two kilometres, sources said.
The forest is around 6 km away from Ramapura police station.
Director General of Police V V Bhasker, who is leading the Karnataka STF, has rushed in with additional forces. Inspector General of Police Kempaiah is on the spot supervising the operations.
Police have kept Nagappa's family informed of the developments. However, the family has refused to say anything in public.
According to district health officials, the STF has sought two ambulances, doctors and nurses. Additional medical units have been called in from neighbouring centres.
Previously, Veerappan always escaped, leaving the hostage behind. But this time he has Nagappa -- a person who he holds responsible for his brother Arjun's death.
