Hostage crisis: Mysore bandh peaceful

The Mysore bandh called by the opposition parties and other associations to pressurise the government into solving the H Nagappa abduction crisis quickly passed off peacefully on Wednesday.

The former deputy chief minister of Karnataka and Janata Dal (Secular) leader, Siddaramaiah, asked the government to suspend operations against Veerappan and clear the deck for negotiations.

"This protest is not against the government, but to pressurise the government to solve the crisis early," he said. "We want the safety of our leader Nagappa first. But we also want an end to the Veerappan menace."

He also said that the government seemed to have no clue on how to solve the crisis.

The ministers were misleading the public with confusing statements, he said, adding that Chief Minister S M Krishna should ask them to keep quiet.

Former chief minister and Janata Dal (United) leader S R Bommai said Nagappa should be released safely either through operations or negotiations.

Meanwhile, the failing health of Parimala, Nagappa's wife, has caused concern.

The supporters of Nagappa fear that with fresh problems, like the Cauvery water dispute, arising between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, attempts for the safe release of the hostage might be affected.
