Forget Sonia, what about your origins: Krishna's poser to Jaya

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Tuesday sought to turn the tables on his Tamil Nadu counterpart J Jayalalithaa for her attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi by referring to her own origins.

"Perhaps, she is attacking Sonia Gandhi out of a sense of insecurity as she (Jayalalithaa) hails from Karnataka. Greater the attack on Karnataka, more the people of Tamil Nadu will be impressed by her," Krishna told reporters in Delhi.

Criticising the AIADMK supremo for raking up the 'dead issue' of the foreign origins of Sonia, Krishna said it had already been settled by the Supreme Court, which has held the Congress president to be an Indian citizen.

Asked to comment on Jayalalithaa's unhappiness with the prime minister on the Cauvery water issue, he shot back, "She is unhappy with everybody - with the prime minister, Sonia Gandhi and S M Krishna. I do not know with whom she is happy."

On Jayalalithaa's charge that Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore) was paid to sandalwood smuggler Veerappan for securing the release of Kannada actor Rajakumar, Krishna said, "It is an irresponsible statement and I reject such insinuations."

On efforts to secure the release of former Karnataka minister H Nagappa, Krishna, who is in Delhi in connection with the Cauvery waters dispute case pending before the Supreme Court, said that the state Director General of Police has been camping in the area for the last nine days to direct rescue efforts.

Krishna said that state Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge had discussed the issue of deploying central forces to reinforce the STF, constituted to nab Veerappan, with Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani when he visited in Gulbarga on Monday.

He said the state was trying to establish contact with the brigand and was sending requests through the All India Radio.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs D B Chandregowda on Tuesday said he would file a contempt of court petition against Jayalalithaa for her remarks on Congress president Sonia Gandhi's citizenship.

He pointed out that the Supreme Court has already given its verdict on Sonia Gandhi's citizenship, declaring her to be an Indian citizen.

He would be filing the petition in his individual capacity, Gowda told reporters in Bangalore.
