162 candidates in fray for the first phase of polling

A total of 162 candidates are left in the fray for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election in 24 constituencies to be held on September 16.

There are 59 candidates contesting from the 10 constituencies of Baramulla, 47 from the five constituencies of Kupwara, 33 from four constituencies of Rajouri, 17 from three constituencies in Poonch and six from the two constituencies of Kargil district, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer S Jamwal said.

The polls for the 87-member house will be held in four phases in the state.

Jamwal said the Rajouri constituency had the highest number of 14 candidates. The Baramulla constituency has 13 candidates in the fray.

Two independent candidates, Nawang Rigzin and Sonam Wanchuk Narboo of the newly formed Ladakh Union Territory Front, have already been declared elected unopposed from the Leh and Nobra constituencies on Monday.
