Krishna denies Jaya's ransom charge

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Monday denied that the state had paid a ransom of Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore) to brigand Veerappan to secure the release of Kannada matinee idol Rajakumar in November 2000, as alleged by his Tamil Nadu counterpart J Jayalalithaa.

Reacting strongly to Jayalalithaa's charge, made earlier in the day in Chennai, Krishna told mediapersons in Bangalore that people holding such responsible positions should not make such false statements.

"No money was paid to Veerappan for releasing Rajakumar," Krishna asserted while reacting to Jayalalithaa's accusations.

Referring to the ongoing efforts to secure the safe release of former Janata Dal legislator leader H Nagappa from the clutches of the outlaw, Krishna said, "As of now, I don't have any news from Veerappan. As and when I get any, I will share it with the people and the media."

He was in constant touch with the Karnataka STF unit and DGP V V Bhaskar, who is camping in Kollegal town, he added.
