Suspected Naxalites loot Rs 1.4 million
from bank in Andhra Pradesh

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Suspected members of the outlawed People's War group of Naxalites on Monday looted Rs 1.4 million from a bank in Mahbubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh.

State police spokesman Shujath Ali told rediff.com that a five-member group robbed a branch of the Andhra Bank at Pentlavalli village under Kollapur police station limits at around 1145 IST.

Carrying a carbine, three large knives and a shotgun, the gang threatened the staff and later fled into the nearby forests with Rs 1.4 million.

In an unrelated incident, three persons were killed and nine injured when some crackers stored in a godown in the temple town of Bhadrachalam exploded accidentally.

According to police sources, the incident occurred when a consignment of crackers brought from Rajahmundry was being unloaded at the godown of a transport company.

When some crackers exploded accidentally, the rest of the goods in the godown caught fire. Two LPG cylinders stored in the premises also exploded.

Two labourers and another person died on the spot while the injured were shifted to a hospital in Bhadrachalam.

Fire Services officials said the damage has been estimated at Rs five to six million.
