Karnataka farmers withdraw agitation

Sadananda R in Chamarajnagar

The Cauvery River Protection Committee has decided to withdraw from Sunday onwards its over-a-month-long agitation against the Supreme Court's order to Karnataka to release Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

This decision was taken on Saturday evening by the committee at a meeting in Mandya.

Announcing this decision, president of committee G Made Gowda said the decision was prompted by recent rains in the Cauvery basin.

However, he warned that the agitation would be resumed if the Supreme Court ruled against the interests of the state.

At present, the Supreme Court is seized of a contempt of court case filed by Tamil Nadu against the Karnataka government.

Meanwhile, the ban on Tamil movies is yet to be lifted.
