Tamil film artistes stage anti-Karnataka rally in Neyveli

An estimated 5000 members of the Tamil film industry, including those known to be pro-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, on Saturday evening staged an anti-Karnataka demonstration in Neyveli, demanding stoppage of power supply to that state.

The town in Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore district is home to the Neyveli Lignite Corporation's thermal power station.

They were protesting against the refusal of Karnataka to release Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu in defiance of a Supreme Court verdict.

A delegation led South Indian Film Artistes Association president Vijaykanth, and Kalaiyulaga Cauvery Poratta Kuzhu [an organisation formed by Tamil film industry personnel to pursue the Cauvery issue] convener Bharati Raaja, actor Kamal Hassan and other film stars called on Chairman and Managing Director of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation S Jayaraman and submitted a memorandum pleading for stoppage of power to Karnataka.

Attired in black and carrying black flags and placards, the protestors raised slogans condemning Karnataka for not obeying the Supreme Court's directives.

Directors K Balachander, R V Udaya Kumar and Manivannan, actors Sarath Kumar, Satyaraj, Karthik, Vijay, Prasanth, Ajit, Simran, Jothika, Mumtaj, Jasmine, Roja, Mansoor Ali Khan and Anandraj, comedians S S Chandran, Vadivelu, Senthil and Manorama were among those present.
