Act on PM's advice: Deve Gowda to
TN, Karnataka

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Former prime minister and leader of the Janata Dal-Secular, H D Deve Gowda, has asked the chief ministers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to act on the advice of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and resolve the Cauvery dispute.

Gowda, who started a 'Janajagruti Abhiyan' [Mass Awareness Programme] from Talakaveri, 26km from Madikeri, on Friday, blamed Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna for creating a constitutional crisis by not implementing the Supreme Court order on the Cauvery issue.

Gowda said there are more important issues in the state that need attention and the chief minister should not waste time on padayatras.

He said his abhiyan was not in response to Krishna's padayatra, but an attempt to tell the people where their chief minister erred.

Gowda, who is touring the Cauvery river basin, also questioned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's irresponsible behaviour towards the issue.

She should restrain herself, he said, while passing comments on neighbouring states. If she lets go of her stubborn attitude and joins hands with the Centre, then the Cauvery crisis can be solved amicably, he said.

He requested the prime minister to intervene and resolve the matter. This would be in the interest of the farmers in both the states, he said.
