Jaya calls for Tamil Nadu bandh on Wednesday

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday called for a state-wide bandh [general strike] on Wednesday to protest against Karnataka's refusal to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority.

The decision was taken at an all-party meeting convened by her.

This is the first government-sponsored bandh in the state in more than 15 years. The last such strike was called by the late chief minister M G Ramachandran over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue in the 1980s.

Jayalalithaa hoped that though the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had boycotted her all-party meeting, it would abide by the unanimous decision at the meeting.

She also said Tamil Nadu will file a second contempt plea against Karnataka in the Supreme Court on Tuesday for not releasing the Cauvery waters.

The state government would also file for damages on behalf of the farmers in the Thanjavur delta, whose crops have been destroyed by Karnataka's continued refusal, she said.
