Jaya wants Karnataka government sacked

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday called upon Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to dismiss the Karnataka government under Article 356 of the Constitution.

In a statement, Jayalalithaa referred to the Karnataka government's approval of Chief Minister S M Krishna's declaration that he would not release water to Tamil Nadu despite the order of the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, differences within the Tamil film industry over the choice of venue for the October 12 protest continued, with filmmaker Bharati Raaja -- president of the newly found Tamil Welfare Protection Forum -- insisting that the rally be held in the 'lignite town' of Neyveli.

He sought to discount anxieties about possible violence at Neyveli, and said anti-Karnataka rallies in Tamil Nadu had been peaceful over the past month.

However, stars like Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan wanted the rally to be held in Chennai.
