Rajnikanth to participate in October 12 rally

Reiterating its decision to go ahead with a protest rally on October 12 on the Cauvery water issue, the South Indian Film Artistes Association (SIFAA) on Saturday night said that all members of the Tamil film industry, including actor Rajnikanth, would participate.

SIFAA had planned to stage demonstrations outside the thermal power plants of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation in Neyveli demanding that Tamil Nadu stop supplying power to Karnataka for the latter's refusal to release Cauvery waters to the Mettur dam.

However, there was a twist in the script in the form of superstar Rajnikanth, whom the film industry expected to lead from the front.

One of the most influential members of the Tamil film industry, he had expressed reservations over the protest in Neyveli saying it would aggravate tensions.

The actor, who hails from Karnataka, later changed his view, perhaps, under pressure from his fans, who felt let down.

Briefing newspersons in Chennai after discussions on the Cauvery issue, actor and MP Sharat Kumar said Tamil artists had the moral right to register their protest since their counterparts in Karnataka were also staging protests on the issue.

Sharat Kumar, however, said that details, including the security of the artists, were being worked out.

He said a delegation led by director Bharati Raja would soon meet Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to discuss the issue.
