HC grants bail to Mani in three cases

The Karnataka high court on Wednesday granted conditional bail in three cases to Tamil activist Kolathur Mani, Veerappan's preferred choice of emissary to negotiate the release of Janata Dal-United leader H Nagappa.

On Friday another bail application will come up for hearing in a lower court in Mysore.

The government is frantically trying to release Mani in two to three days in view of Veerappan's demands.

Last week, the brigand had served a 12-day ultimatum to the Karnataka government on sending Mani as emissary. He had threatened to kill Nagappa if his demand was not met.

Though Veerappan’s deadline is set to expire on November 30, the government is upbeat that he would not harm his hostage and await Mani’s release on bail.

Mani furnished a bond of Rs 100,000 and two sureties for the like sum when the bail applications came up for hearing.

Justice H N Narayana directed Mani to appear before the Kollegal rural police once in ten days. He also asked the activist to appear before the court as and when summons were issued, failing which the bail would be cancelled.

With this, Mani has secured bail in cases booked against him in Kollegal, Chamarajanagar and Ramapura police stations.

Meanwhile, the high-power committee, set up by the Karnataka government to secure Nagappa’ release, would be meeting in Bangalore on Friday under the chairmanship of state Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge to work out the modalities of sending Mani as an emissary to meet Veerappan.
