Karnataka seeks legal advice for
Mani's release

Fakir Chand in Bangalore

The Karnataka government has sought legal advice from experts on sending Kolathur Mani, who is in jail, to negotiate the release of Janata Dal leader H Nagappa from the clutches of Veerappan.

On Thursday Veerappan had sent an audiocassette saying he would kill Nagappa if the government did not send Mani within 12 days.

At a meeting presided over by Chief Minister S M Krishna in Bangalore on Friday, legal experts, including the state advocate-general, briefed the government on the options available in seeking bail for Mani, who is facing 5-6 cases for supplying arms and explosives to Veerappan.

Mani's bail applications have been pending in various courts in Bangalore, Mysore, and Kollegal for the past 6-8 months. He is currently lodged in the Bellary jail.

The chief minister also convened the Cabinet and an all-party meeting to discuss the issue on Saturday.

Krishna met Nagappa's family earlier in the day and expressed confidence that the hostage would be freed soon.
