Naxalites blow up Andhra bus; 25 killed

At least 25 passengers were killed and 15 injured when Naxalites of the People's War blew up a bus belonging to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation in Warangal district on Monday night.

Director-General of Police Pervaram Ramulu told rediff.com that the incident occurred at around 2030 IST when the bus was going to Tupakulagudem from Eturunagaram town. As the bus passed through a gravel road near Chintagudem village, the Naxalites triggered a landmine, he said.

According to the DGP, last week police had launched a special drive against the extremists in the forest area of Godavari valley adjoining Chhattisgarh state.

Twelve Naxalites were killed during the operations. The latest encounter took place on Sunday in which five were killed.

"Frustrated over these reverses, the PWG has resorted to this desperate act. They obviously mistook civilians for police personnel in mufti. The police is gearing up to meet the situation. Already, a dozen special parties are combing in the area," the DGP added.
