Lack of emissaries hampering efforts
to free Nagappa: Krishna

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna has said that lack of emissaries was hampering efforts to secure the release of former minister H Nagappa now in Veerappan's custody.

Talking to newspersons in Pondicherry before leaving for Thirunallar in the Karaikkal enclave of the Union Territory, he pointed out how a host of emissaries helped secure Kannada actor Rajakumar's freedom, who too was abducted by the brigand two years back.

In this context, Krishna pointed to the role played by journalist Nakkeeran Gopal, Tamil Nationalist leader Pazha Nedumaran and a host of others during that episode.

"This time, there are no such emissaries as those named by the brigand have either turned down requests to mediate or are in prison," he said.

As a follow-up to the Centre's initiative at the instance of Nagappa's family, Krishna would be despatching Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge and Education Minister Chandra Shekhar to Chennai on Monday for talks with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to discuss rescue efforts.

Karnataka, it is believed, wants Tamil Nadu to ease operations to nab Veerappan to facilitate the movement of emissaries to meet the bandit. Once this goal is achieved, Karnataka is likely to cooperate in efforts to nab Veerappan.

Krishna later paid a visit to the famous temple for Shani devta at Thirunallar.
