Religious parties harden stand on Musharraf

The crisis over government formation in Pakistan continued on Thursday, as political parties failed to resolve the deadlock over General Pervez Musharraf's presidency and the validity of his recent constitutional amendments.

Efforts to work out a compromise failed, as the alliance of religious parties, the Muthahida Majlis-e-Amal, hardened its stand after an overnight brainstorming session of its top leaders in Karachi.

"Parliament is the sovereign body and supremacy of any individual and any other institution will not be accepted," MMA president Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani said.

He said he had made it clear to Musharraf that the MMA will not accept the National Security Council and expressed his reservations on the Legal Framework Order, which incorporated the general's election as president, and his constitutional amendments.
