Educational institutions in Mandya reopen

Karnataka's Mandya district limped back to normalcy, as schools and colleges reopened on Thursday.

Barring a few days in between, the institutions remained shut in view of the protests following the September 8 order of the Supreme Court, directing Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu.

The institutions were slated to open from November 2, but imposition of curfew following protests by farmers made this impossible.

On Thursday, the authorities withdrew prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The president of Cauvery River Protection Committee, G Made Gowda, toured Mandya and met farmers to take their views on the agitation.

He said the farmers expressed their support and solidarity for his demand for a white paper on the issue.

In Mysore, Kannada writers took to streets demanding immediate meeting of Cauvery River Authority to discuss the distress sharing formula.

They also criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's observation against the CRA.
