Made Gowda demands white paper on Cauvery issue

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

The president of the Cauvery River Protection Committee, G Made Gowda, said on Wednesday that farmers would continue their agitation till the Karnataka government issues a white paper on the Cauvery issue.

He accused the government of giving confusing signals about the amount of water being released to Tamil Nadu.

"One minister says the government has stopped releasing water to Tamil Nadu. Another minister says that the government has already released the required water and there is no need to release more. But again the Cabinet spokesperson says the government has continued releasing water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Supreme Court," he said.

"Whom do we believe now? Is the government serious about protecting the interest of farmers," he asked.

He said the government should give details of the amount of water in its reservoirs and the quantity released. Gowda also wanted to know what the government was doing to save the standing crops.

According to Gowda, officials have been asked to keep silence over these issues.

Meanwhile, Janata Dal leaders said instead of protesting here and there, the farmers should come together and fight against the "injustice" done to them.
